Ray Gordon York, 88, of Owensboro, passed away Monday, February 4, 2013 at Owensboro Medical Health Systems. Born in McLean County, a son of the late Mape and Flora Jolly York, his family moved to Ohio County when he was a teenager. He came to Owensboro to work and then moved to Burner City, IN to work construction, and then to Tell City, IN where he worked building barges. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943, Ray served as a military policeman in the South Pacific theatre on Guadalcanal, in the Philippines, and Okinawa. Following the war he worked at V.E. Anderson and continued to serve in the United States Army Reserve during which time his unit was activated in 1950 and 1953. He later joined Glenn Funeral Home and then Bass & Co. as a truck driver, retiring after 30 years. During his retirement he drove for Harry Holder Ford and later Champion. Ray was an active member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church and its Wayne Foust Sunday school class and was instrumental in establishing its soup kitchen. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Ricky Scott York, his granddaughter, Leslie Ann York, his brother, William "Bill" York, and his sister, Mattie Sutherlin.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Audrey Opal Jarboe York; his sons, Rick Gordon York (Carla) and Dennis York; his grandsons, Jeff York (Krissy), and Jonathan York; his great-grandsons, Trevor Scott York and Scott Jefferson York; and his great-great-granddaughter, Nahla Daugherty, all of Owensboro.
The funeral service, officiated by the Rev. Randall Jones, will be 12:00 noon Thursday in the Chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and after 11:00 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the memorial Fund of Woodlawn United Methodist Church.
