It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved Husband, Father, and Papaw, Philip Wade Phelps, 76, of Owensboro, entered the gates of Heaven on Sunday, August 24, 2025.
He was born on July 17, 1949, in Madisonville, Kentucky, to the late James and Ruth Phelps.
In 1969, Phil married the love of his life, Brenda Faye Drury (Faye Baby), and began their life together for 56 years. Together, they built a beautiful life focused on faith and family. Phil retired from Aleris Aluminum after 35 years. He was a family man, always lending a helping hand. He was an avid sports fan, from coaching football, baseball, basketball, and softball at Our Lady of Lourdes, to attending and cheering on his children and grandchildren at all of their sporting events. He was a big supporter of UK Basketball, the Kansas City Chiefs, and Owensboro Catholic sports. He loved to collect model classic cars, especially 1957 models. He loved riding his scooter in the neighborhood, talking to friends and neighbors.
Phil was a proud Vietnam veteran, serving as a Sergeant in the US Army. From his sacrifices in Vietnam, he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, ALS, in 2010. He fought the disease hard and set goals to beat it for 15 years. He fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sibling, Kenny Phelps, of Mt. Vernon, IN., and granddaughters, Avery Ruth and Jaleigh Phelps of Owensboro.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 56 years, Brenda Phelps of Owensboro; sons, Jeremy Phelps (Melissa), Chris "Digger" Phelps (Marta), and daughter Lori Phelps Roberts (Phil) all of Owensboro; grandchildren, Madison Roberts, Hadley Phelps, Trey Roberts, Tanner Roberts, Hudson Phelps, Trax Roberts, and Hallie Phelps; siblings, Sheila Abney (Tony) of Beaver Dam, Benny Phelps (Becky) of Hawesville, Dennis Phelps (Leslie), and Donna Perry (Wade) of Owensboro, and several nieces and nephews.
The family also extends a heartfelt thank you to the nurses of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky, Dr. David Johnson, and the doctors and nurses of the VA of Owensboro and Lexington, KY.
The funeral Mass for Philip Phelps will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at Precious Blood Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until 7:00 pm with a time for sharing and reflection at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 27, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation on Thursday will begin at 10:00 at Precious Blood Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will follow the Mass at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
