Reverend Philip Byron Carlisle, 96, of Owensboro passed away Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Wellington Parc. Born in Waycross, GA on July 8, 1915, he was the son of the late Philander Byron and Minnie Blackburn Carlisle. Rev. Carlisle was raised in Fitzgerald, GA and had lived in Owensboro since 1957 when he moved here to become the pastor of First Christian Church. He graduated from Transylvania University in 1939 and from Lexington Theological Seminary in 1942 and was ordained a minister in the Disciples of Christ (Christian Church). In addition to First Christian Church in Owensboro, he served as senior pastor of First Christian Church, Mexico, MO; Pfafftown Christian Church, Pfafftown, NC; and First Christian Church, Wilmington, NC; as well as a number of churches on an interim basis.
Reverend Carlisle was a world traveler and, along with his wife, had visited countries on every continent except Antarctica. He was also an avid gardener, raised vegetables without pesticides before that was popular, and enjoyed major league baseball.
Reverend Carlisle was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Clarine Linley Carlisle, in 2001.
Surviving are his daughters, Joy Carlisle McIlwain of Avondale Estates, GA and Judy Carlisle Reeves and her husband John of Ft Worth, TX; a nephew, Rick Tipton and his wife Katie of Prospect, KY; and a niece, Roberta Tipton and her husband Ken Gould of Berkeley Heights, NJ.
Memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2012 at First Christian Church, 700 J.R. Miller Blvd., Owensboro, KY 42303. The family will receive friends in the atrium of the church from 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. Inurment will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory is handling arrangements.
