Maple Mount — Sister Philomena Cox, 91, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, died on her birthday, March 9, 2017, at Mount Saint Joseph. She was a native of Owensboro, serving in her 72nd year of religious life.
"Sister Phil" loved a challenge and was handy with tools like her patron, Saint Joseph the Worker. A teacher or principal for 29 years, she was happy to roll up her sleeves and work as director of building services at Brescia College/University from 1976-91.
She was principal at St. Alphonsus School, St. Joseph (1956-59) and St. Mary Magdalene School, Sorgho (1963-69), and taught at St. Pius in Owensboro (1962-63). After leaving Brescia, she ministered at the Motherhouse, first as a business office secretary (1991-2000), then as local community treasurer from 2000 until her retirement in 2008. She also ministered in the Archdiocese of Louisville.
Survivors include a brother-in-law, Louis Taylor, a niece, Mary Lou Nolan, and members of her religious community.
The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, at Mount Saint Joseph, where visitation begins Monday at 4 p.m., with a wake service following at 6:30 p.m.
