Peter Charles “Pete” Johnson, Sr., 78, of Owensboro passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2025 at Wellington Parc surrounded by his loved ones. He was born August 2, 1947 in Daviess County to the late William A. and Cornelius Josephine Gropp Johnson. Pete was a member of Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church and was retired as Purchasing Manager for Johnson Electric which became Owensboro Electric Supply and is now Rexel. His career started out working for the W. T. Grant store and Orscheln Farm and Home. He was a 1965 graduate of Owensboro Catholic High School and a 1969 graduate of Bellermine College. Pete was a former president of the Eastern Little League, coached baseball and football at Blessed Mother, and was an avid Owensboro Catholic High School sports fan. He had been actively involved with Habitat for Humanity and went on a mission trip with a church group to Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina hit. Pete enjoyed, golfing, fishing, and going on the annual fishing trip to Lake Barkley with the Cecil Family and friends. He loved feeding the birds at home, working in their yard, having coffee every morning with a group of friends at Gary’s Drive-in, and making Christmas cookies with his grandchildren.
Pete was also preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas Johnson, Jerry Johnson, and Hal Johnson, Sr.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Patricia Grady “Patty” Johnson; three sons, Peter Charles “Charlie” Johnson, Jr. and wife Allison of Owensboro, Matthew Boyd “Matt” Johnson and wife Rheonna of Owensboro, and Mark Allen Johnson and wife Stephanie of Henderson; nine grandchildren, Brooke Arthur (Chase), Parker Johnson (Emma), Ava Johnson, Brayden Johnson, William Johnson (Mackenzie), Beth Leichhardt (Mason), Ben Johnson, Devan Rudd, and Jacob Melton (Madison) and eight great grandchildren; a sister, Cloa Thompson of Owensboro and a brother, Bill Johnson (June) of Owensboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral Mass will be 10 am Tuesday, October 21, at Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 PM until 7 PM with prayers at 6:30 PM Monday and from 8:30 AM until 9:30 AM Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the nurses and staff at Wellington Parc for the love and compassionate care they gave Pete and also a thank you to their neighbors for the kind help they gave him.
