Peggy Ann (Chamberlin) Grossman

July 18, 1934 — September 16, 2017

Peggy Ann (Chamberlin) Grossman, born on July 18, 1934, ended her life's journey on September 16, 2017. Born in Owensboro, she lived in Kentucky and Indiana in her childhood, and graduated from Owensboro Senior High School. In her youth, she was always involved in church activities and missions and served as church secretary and pianist. She met Paul Grossman at church, who shared her calling to become missionaries to Africa and they married in 1953. They pastored several churches in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky before being appointed to the Southern Baptist International Mission Board in 1965. Paul and Peggy's missionary career took them to the West African countries of Liberia, Senegal and Burkina Faso. Peggy devoted her life to teaching children and women about Jesus, teaching women to sew, establishing and leading literacy programs, leading music in church worship, teaching Bible classes, translating songs and Bible passages into French and the local tribal language. She and Paul had an adventurous life in Africa: digging wells, walking or riding their motorbikes to remote villages, building numerous village churches, hosting volunteers who came to Africa for short term mission efforts, and loving the African people. Upon retirement Peggy and Paul lived in Springfield, Tennessee where she started the English as a Second Language program for the county Baptist Association. This was accomplished even as her health started to fail and she lost her sight. Eventually Peggy and Paul decided to return to her hometown of Owensboro, having served the Lord faithfully with the gifts He had given them. She received a Bachelor's from Kentucky Southern University and a Master's from Western Kentucky University, both in Elementary Education. She loved to write and always kept in touch with her family through weekly letters and with her friends and supporters through frequent newsletters - ultimately authoring a book entitled "Laborers Together" about her life as a missionary. She adored games, and played with her children, grandchildren, and friends with enthusiasm. Peggy was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Paul Henry Grossman, her parents Albert B. and Mary Louise (Craig) Chamberlin, and her grandson Bailey Grossman-Orr. She is survived by her children Paula Mutchler (Carl), Kenneth Grossman (Brenda), Paul Grossman Jr. (Jan), and Mareida Grossman-Orr (Vernon), her grandchildren Kenny Ryan Grossman, Doran Grossman-Orr, Meghan Angell (Nate), Jared Grossman, Paige Grossman, and Cayla Grossman-Orr, and her first great-grandchild whom she adored, Henry Benjamin Angell. Leaving a life of much physical pain but also much faith and love, Peggy has moved onward to a life without pain and with continuous peace, joy, and adoration of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
