Paul Douglas Watkins

Paul Douglas Watkins, 75, of Owensboro, passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at Hermitage Care and Rehabilitation Center. Doug was born in Owensboro on September 11, 1935, to the late Paul S. Watkins and Virginia Smith Watkins. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Kathy) Rendos Watkins; son Jonathan Rendos Watkins, and a sister, Bette Watkins Lorenzen, Frankfort, KY, and a loving and faithful dog, Crickett.

Doug was a graduate of Owensboro Senior High School, class of 1953; attended Kentucky Wesleyan College; and was a graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Banking program.

After two-years of service in the United States Army, Doug returned to Owensboro to begin a 50 year banking career. He has worked at Owensboro National Bank; comptroller at Farmers and Merchants Bank in Livermore Kentucky; comptroller for Central Bank and Trust; regional comptroller for National City Bank (formerly Central Bank and Trust Company) and retired from Independence Bank (internal auditor) in October 2007.

Along with his banking career, Doug was very involved in civic organizations. He was a past President of the Kiwanis Club, where he was instrumental in starting the Kiwanis TV Auction; and past President, Owensboro Country Club. He also initiated a Junior Achievement banking service, and served two years as President of the Owensboro Middle School PTO. Perhaps Doug's greatest contribution to his community was the lasting influence he had on boys and young men and a Little league coach for 23 years. Doug's Southern Little League team was the 1972 State Champion.

Visitation is Friday, January 21, at Glenn Funeral Home, from 1:00 -5:00pm and on Saturday, January 22 after 8:30am. Funeral Services are 10:00am Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Fr. Brad Whistle and Fr. Tony Jones Interment will be private.
