He served on the USS Lamons (DE-743) and the USS Weaver (DE-741) as a Master Machinist. After his honorable discharge in 1946 from Jacksonville, FL, Paul traveled by train to return to Fulton. When he arrived, his sister and her best friend, Stella Lawrence met him at the station. Paul and Stella married September 15, 1947, and remained so for over 74 years. Paul began working as an engineer for the Illinois Central Railroad for more than forty years. The railroad took him from Fulton to Buford, IL, Waterloo, IA, Champaign, IL, Paducah and Louisville, KY, and Palestine, IL.
In addition to his parents, Paul also was preceded in death by his wife, Stella in 2022, and a son, Craig Gholson. He was also preceded by his sisters, Anita Browder, Hazel Slusher, and Martha Week and his brothers, Irvin and Willard Gholson.

Paul enjoyed many friends and neighbors, playing bridge, golf, yard work, and fixing things that were broken and reengineering them so that they worked just fine. He was a member of Jeffersontown United Methodist Church for over 50 years and took care of the grounds for many years.
