Patricia ''Pat'' Sanders, 84, returned to the God from whom she was made on Thursday, May 21, 2015, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital.
Born in Groton, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Frank and Zoe' Bulger Zalesney, Pat graduated second in her high school in Groton and from nursing school in Leomister, Massachusetts.
Following becoming a registered nurse she worked in Massachusetts before joining the Navy where she served at St. Alban Hospital in New York City before being transferred to the Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, California, where she met and in 1957 married her husband Si. She was discharged as a Lieutenant and following Si's discharge they returned to Owensboro, his hometown.
Pat taught nursing at the former Daviess County Hospital School of Nursing. She joined the Daviess County Health Department, where her 20 year career focused in large degree on prenatal and pediatric care Pat was an active and longtime supporter of Birth Right and was founder of the Lost and Found Voice Club for those having had laryngectomies. She established SIDS counseling in Western Kentucky.
Her other involvements included the Wendell Foster Campus and her role in the former Josiah Henson Project.
She also was preceded in death by her sisters-in-law Suzanne Edwards, Diane Ware, and Alleda ''Jessie'' Dukate.
Pat is survived by her husband, Simon Sanders; her children Scott Sanders and his wife, Tammy of Hanson, Maggie Sedlak and her husband, David of Fredericksburg, Virginia and Dawn Swift and her husband, Max of Owensboro; her grandchildren Scarlett Charles and her husband Kaiser, Taylor Sanders, Hunter Sanders, Hayden Sanders, Joshua Sedlak, Danielle Sedlak, Moriah Sedlak, Thomas ''Bart'' Swift, Brett Swift and his wife Emily, Marcus ''Christian'' Swift, Stefan Swift, and Micah Swift; her brother Donald Zalesney of Olympia, Washington; her sisters-in-law Alice Reynolds and Molly Sanders; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory where prayers will be said at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The funeral Mass for Pat will be 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Catholic Church. Private interment will be in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery.
