P. Carson Smith

P. Carson Smith, 61, of Owensboro, KY, died Saturday, December 8, 2012, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born in Greenville, KY, to the late John Robert and Nancy Batsel Shutt. She graduated from Greenville High School and Murray State University, and received her Masters and Rank 1 Administrative Degree from Eastern Kentucky University. Carson began her teaching career in Paris, KY and then moved to Goodloe Elementary School in Owensboro, she retired as principal of Estes Elementary School. She was a member of Christ Community Church where, as a devout Christian, she used her talents in music and drama to serve the Lord. She was active in the community and had a gift for bringing people together for a common goal such as her work with the Goodfellows Club and the Theatre Workshop of Owensboro and she found great joy performing with the Owensboro Symphony Chorus. Carson loved to garden, she spent many hours growing the most beautiful flowers, a talent that also served her in her professional life where her greatest success was helping to grow people, it was her mission to help other people succeed. Her enthusiasm for her work, her family and her friends will be greatly missed. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William E. Smith and her grandmother, Fern Y. Shutt.

Survivors include her brother, John Robert Shutt, Jr. and his wife Marilyn of Sellersburg, IN; niece Jessica Ford and her husband Bart; great niece and nephew, Joel Ford and Olivia Ford all of Bloomington, IN; uncle, John Batsel of CO; many cousins including Charles M. Young of Louisville, KY; brother-in-law and sister-in-law; Roy and Rose Smith of College Station, TX; step children, Janet Chambers and her husband David of Kansas and Greg Smith and his wife Lauren of Memphis, TN; and 10 step-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday and after 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Goodfellows Club or Gideon's International.
