Ozzie Mae Newcom Early

Ozzie Newcom Early, 69, of Hartford passed away Friday, October 11, 2008 at her home. Born May 22, 1939 in Birk City (Daviess County), she was the second of two children of Ernest Volous and Pearl Patton Newcom. She retired as Assistant Staff Manager from Bell South Telephone Company on December 15, 1994 after 371/2 years of service. Her telephone career took her to Cocoa, Florida where she had calls from all the original astronauts in the early 1960's and to Lake Charles, LA in 1983 and held various jobs in the Owensboro Area. She enjoyed all these jobs very much every day. Ozzie was a 1957 graduate of Daviess County High School and was the secretary for her " 50th" high school reunion. She was preceded in death by her parents and also a dear sister-in-law, Shirley Fleming Newcom.

She was a former member of Seven Hills Baptist Church (32 years) and Hartford Baptist Church (12 years) and presently is a member of Riverside Baptist Church where she was the Vice President of her Sunday School Class. Mrs. Early was also a member of AARP, the Telephone Pioneers of America, Chapter 32, Pennyrile Council, was a Golden Partner, and was a Kentucky Colonel. She was a collector of Coca Cola memorabilia.

She is survived by her children, William B. "Billie" (and Barbara) Early of Hawesville and Sheila "Gay" Early of Hartford; a brother, Norman ( and Darlene) Newcom of Owensboro; grandsons, Joshua E. Dawson of Hartford, William B. "Willie" Early III of Hawesville, and Denise Elizabeth "Deni Beth" Early of Nashville, TN; a step-grandson, Lee Snyder of Hawesville; a step-great-granddaughter, Haylee Michele Snyder of Hawesville; and two nieces and a nephew. She is also survived by a dear 98 years old companion, Rev. Duncan Smith of Hartford and a dear friend since 1946 who is like a sister, Nancy Jane West Petty of Owensboro.

Service are 2 p.m. Monday, October 13, 2008 at Glenn Funeral Home with burial in Red Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Utica. Visiation will be from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam, KY and after 10 a.m. on Monday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro.
