Ora Franklin ''Frank'' Skaggs, 72, of Philpot, KY died at his home on December 24, 2014 after a three year battle with cancer.
Frank was born on June 1st, 1942 at the home place on Coal Creek at Martha, KY in Lawrence County to the late Arnold T and Margaret Jane Wright Skaggs. Frank was the youngest of six children. In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his five siblings: James Luther Skaggs, Morgan Skaggs, Mary Ella Skaggs, Este Vanover and Magdalene Tackett.
Frank and his siblings were the fourth generation of the family to live and work on the family farm (established prior to 1885) during his early years. At a young age, his parents and older siblings instilled ''hard work ethics and a strong sense of responsibility'' in him. Frank spent his early years working alongside his father and older brothers in whatever that day's task was. He spent many of his early years working with his father and brother, Morgan, in the logwoods harvesting trees for the family's sawmill business. As Frank matured he spent several years working in the area oil fields.
On April 15th, 1961 Frank married Dorothy ''Dottie'' Barker Skaggs with whom he spent the next 53 years raising a family. In 1970 Frank and Dottie moved their family to Cloverport, KY where he worked on the construction of the Southwire plant. This area of Kentucky became their home as Frank became a maintenance mechanic and welder for Southwire after the construction was completed. Frank retired from Southwire as Senior Maintenance Mechanic after 38 years of service in 2008.
After retirement Frank loved spending his time working in his garage fixing cars, woodworking and doing metal works. Frank particular enjoyed building instruments and props for the Daviess County High School Band and assisting getting them on and off the field of competition in a timely manner.
Frank is survived by his wife, Dottie; a son, Jerry Franklin (Suzy) Skaggs; a daughter, Teresa Faye (Daniel) Skaggs Clark; and his grandchildren, Brittany Alden Skaggs, Devon Harpole, James Victor Skaggs and John Franklin Crowe.
The funeral service will be held at 10 AM Tuesday, December 30 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Frank' son-in-law, Dan Clark, will officiate. Friends may visit from 3- 8 PM Monday and after 9 AM Tuesday.
