Ora Cecil Mackey

June 25, 1914 — August 6, 2004

Ora Cecil Mackey, 90, of Owensboro, died Friday, August 6, 2004 at the Carmel Home. Miss Mackey was born in Daviess County, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Barney and Mona Baird Mackey. She received her BS in elementary education from Western Kentucky State University, her MS in administration and supervision from Indiana University, and continued her post graduate work at the University of Kentucky and George Peabody College for Teachers. Miss Mackey was a member of First Baptist Church. Her professional career included service as a primary teacher at Utica School, principal at Snyder School, Elementary Supervisor for the Daviess County schools, Director of Elementary Education for the Daviess County schools, and instructor of Teaching of Reading and Introduction to Education at both Kentucky Wesleyan and Brescia colleges. Her professional affiliations included being a member and president of Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, corresponding secretary of Alpha Gamma State of Delta Kappa Gamma, a charter member of the Owensboro branch of the American Association of University Women, a life member of the National Education Association, a member of the state and national Association for Administration and Supervisors, the local, state and national International Reading Association, member and state secretary of the Association for Childhood Education, a member of the Kentucky Association of School Administrators, a member of the board of directors of Kentucky Educational Supervisors, the Owensboro Council for Retarded Citizens, and a charter member of the Council for Exceptional Children. She was involved civically as board member and president of the Owensboro-Daviess County Mental Heath Association, a member of the Task Force Children in Need of Supervision, on the Educational Committee of the Family Life Council, a board member of the American Red Cross, and board member, secretary and member of the executive committee of the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra. Miss Mackey was listen in Whos Who in American Education. Her brother, James H. Bubbie Mackey, preceded her in death
She is survived by her brother and his wife, Allen Dean and Mary B. OBryan-Mackey of St. Joseph, a nephew, Jay Mackey of Utica, two nieces, Mary M. Elliott of Owensboro and Ann Powers of Utica, and 9 great nieces and great nephews, Jeff Mackey, James J. Mackey, Burns Mackey, Mari-Scarlett Mackey, Ashley Powers Ferguson, Hadley Powers Embry, Allie E. Powers, Jill Elliott Johnson, and Kerribeth Elliott.
Services are at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Glenn Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday and after 9:00 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Utica Cemetery. Expression of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.
