Opal M. Smith

Opal M. Smith, 67, of Owensboro, formerly of Lewisport, went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 21, 2009 at her home. She was born on May 14, 1942 in Hancock Co., Ky.

Opal was a long-time member of Lewisport Baptist Church. After developing cancer, she moved to Owensboro and attended Yellow Creek Baptist Church and Owensboro Christian Church with family and friends.

Opal loved to be around people and took jobs where she could interact with the public. She was a Credit Investigator for Sears for many years and was also a Mary Kay consultant and won numerous awards for her sales. When she went to work for Owensboro Grain Co., she found her dream job. There she became known as the "Voice of Owensboro Grain" as she spent 26 years as the Switchboard Operator and Receptionist. Opal loved her co-workers and always had a ready smile and a friendly word for the farmers she respected so much.

Her happiest days were those spent with her grandsons, especially traveling on family vacations.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank "Jimmie" Smith, her parents, Orville and Mary Whitten Whistle, a brother, Donald Whistle, a sister, Lillian Whistle, and a fiance, Ollie Quinn.

Survivors include her beloved daughter, Brenda (Noel) Brantley of Owensboro, two grandsons, Tyler and Chad Brantley, both of Lexington, and an aunt, Elizabeth Galliers of Ohio.

Services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 24, at Lewisport Baptist Church with Rev. Bob White officiating. Burial will follow in Cloverport Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and after 10:00 A.M. Thursday at Lewisport Baptist Church.

The family has requested that donations be made to Lewisport Baptist Church, 1115 Pell St., Lewisport, Ky. 42351 or to the Yellow Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 5741 Highway 144, Owensboro, Ky. 42303.
