Oba Gilbert Onstott

Oba Gilbert Onstott, 96, of Owensboro, formerly of Philpot, passed away Monday, December 5, 2011 at Owensboro Medical Health System. Mr. Onstott was born in Daviess County, a son of the late Everett L. and Lucy Bristow Onstott. A member of Friendship Baptist Church for more than 70 years, he had been a deacon and taught Sunday school. For 20 years he was a rural letter carrier. Mr. Onstott was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. During WW II he served in the Philippines, receiving the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one star and the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with two stars. He had been a member and past secretary-treasurer of the Rural Letter Carriers Association, the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Mae Cook Onstott, a son, John David Onstott, and a daughter Jane Beth Onstott; sisters Claribel Basham and Stella Mae Padgett; and brothers George Onstott, Henry Onstott, James Onstott, and Iverson Onstott.

Mr. Onstott is survived by his children, Nana Chapman (Dale) and Larry G. Onstott (Sandra), both of Philpot; his sister, Dorothy L. Swim of Evansville; his grandchildren, Lisa Chapman of Bowling Green, Larry Joseph Onstott and Kim Underhill both of Philpot; step-grandchildren Bradley Kellems of Deanfiled, Gilbert Kellems of Owensboro and 9 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service for Mr. Onstott, officiated by Rev. Jerry Lambrich and Rev. Brian Roberts, will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Friendship Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 1:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery.
