Norman Gene Tomes, 73, of Owensboro, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at Owensboro Medical Health System due to complications of a sudden stroke. He was born on October 9, 1936 in Rumsey, Ky. to the late Victor Garland and Bena Stokes Tomes. He was retired after 35 years of hard work and service with the Teamsters Union Local #89 having worked as a routeman with Ideal Milk Co. and the Dolly Madison Co. Recently, he also enjoyed delivering flowers for Gary's Fleur De Lis. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army as a medic with the 85th Evac Hospital at Fort Hood Army Base in Texas. He earned the Good Conduct, 1 year driver badge w/bar, Rifle Sharpshooter medal, and was honorably discharged. He was a member of Yelvington Baptist Church where he served as deacon and in any other capacity he was asked to serve his Lord including visiting sick members. He also served as a volunteer firefighter for the Yelvington Fire Dept. and was a member of the Ensor Masonic Lodge #729. Norman was a devoted, loving, and cherished husband, father, and granddad known to his grandkids as "G-Dad". His five grandkids were the love of his life and he loved spending time and playing with them all. He was an avid U. K. fan and fisherman, enjoyed playing golf with his golfing buddies, and gardening in which he liked to brag about his tomatoes. He was also preceded in death by his first wife of 10 years, Brenda Bell Tomes and son Bradley Jay Tomes who both passed away on Sept 15, 1973, and two brothers, James Edward and Bobby Joe Tomes.
Surviving are his loving wife of 35 years, Janet May Tomes, son, Kevin Gene Tomes and wife Becky of Newport News, VA, two daughters, Darla May Tomes of Alexandria, VA and Crystal Tomes Heady and husband Chad of Owensboro, five grandchildren, Jessica Carol and Jonathan Presley Tomes, both of Newport News, and Carter Daniel, Chloe May, and Chaney Lynn Heady, all of Owensboro, a sister Peggy Tomes Martin of Senatobia, MS, a mother-in-law Marie Coons Bell of Yelvington, and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 24 in the chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will follow in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 P.M. Monday and after 10:00 A.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.
