Norma Jean Smith Stone, 90, of Owensboro, died Wednesday, March 28, 2018. She was born March 2, 1928, in Owensboro to the late Elmer and Helen Prince Smith.
Jean, as she was known to her friends, graduated from Owensboro Senior High in 1944 and attended Western Kentucky University where she played clarinet in the marching band. She later transferred to the University of Kentucky studying Medical Technology. She was a lifetime member of Zion United Church of Christ where she sang in the choir, served on the Church Council, and was active in Women's Guild, Bible School, and as President of Church Women United.
On September 4, 1948, she married Roy E. Stone. In a marriage that lasted 67 years until his death in February 2016, they lived two years in Italy and Germany as part of his military service and returned to Owensboro to make their home. Jean was a Brownie and Cub Scout leader and initiated an equestrian unit as a leader and trainer for Girl Scouts.
Special trophies attest to their love of golf. They attended PGA tournaments in Hawaii, California, North Carolina and Louisville, KY. Jean and Roy loved to travel! Together they supported Kentucky Wesleyan College, where Roy served as Business Manager and Treasurer, and the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra. Jean also enjoyed playing bridge and "Hand and Foot" and was a true blue Kentucky Wildcat fan.
Survivors include a son, Robert E. Stone, Owensboro, and a daughter, Sharon (Richard) Clements, Cameron, NC.; a grandson, Dr. Casey (Lucinda) Clements, and three great granddaughters: Edra, Roslyn and Joy, Oronoco, MN.
Visitation will be from 10 AM to 2 PM Friday, April 6, 2018 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. A celebration of life service will be performed at 2 PM at the funeral home followed by inurnment at Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
