Norma Elam Lester, mother, grandmother and friend extraordinaire, died Sunday, November 18, 2012 at Owensboro Medical Health System.
She was born to the late David and Pearl Elam, March 7, 1927, in Zanesville, Ohio. She married the late Edgel Lester in 1947, and they lived together in Middletown, Ohio, before relocating to Owensboro in 1953.
Norma was passionate about making a difference in the lives of others. She was a member of the Owensboro Women's Club, the Younger Women's Club, and was a Kentucky Colonel. She retired as the secretary for Newton Parrish Elementary School. She did volunteer work for St. Jude's Children's Hospital, the Western Kentucky Veteran's Hospital, and Daviess County Middle School. She was an active member at Settle Memorial United Methodist Church, and the Mary Lou Phillips Sunday School Class. Norma spent much of her free time helping others, embodying the angelic qualities of her prized angel collection.
She was an avid bridge player, who enjoyed taking part in several bridge clubs in Owensboro. Christmas was her favorite time of the year and she loved all aspects of this holiday season and brought her own "Joy to the World". She also loved spending time with her family and friends.
Norma is survived by four children: David Lester (J.D.), Ed Lester (Deborah), Jean Kamuf (Jerry), Janet Land (Steve); grandchildren, Kym Newcom (Brad), Justin Lester, Sean Land (Brooke), Whitney Combs (D.G.), Tyson Kamuf (Amber), Katie Hopkins (Ian), Ben Lester (Christina), Jackson Lester, and Scout Lester; and great- grandchildren, Courtney, Emma, Olivia, Caitlin, Rachel, Amelia, Grayson, Taylor, Spencer, Keaton, Willow, Emmie, and Cooper.
Services will be 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday and after Noon on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Settle Memorial United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
