Norma Kathryn Bowen

Norma Kathryn Bowen, 94, of Owensboro passed away Monday, April 28, 2014 at her home following a brief illness. Born in Kansas, a daughter of the late Robert and Louise Wohloeb Vogel, she was raised in Spencer County, Indiana. She attended the one room school at Elm Corner and there scored 13 points for the girl's basketball team. Following her graduation from Grandview High School she attended Lockyear Business College in Evansville, where she met her husband Rollin L. Bowen. Following their marriage and his enlistment in the United States Army they moved to Camp Crowder in Missouri prior to his deployment to the Pacific Theatre. Following the war, they returned to Evansville before moving to Owensboro. Mrs. Bowen was actively involved in the educational and athletic interests of her three sons. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and its Women's Guild, an accomplished duplicate bridge player, an avid golfer, and a volunteer at the Owensboro Area Museum. She was a committed fan of University of Kentucky and Kentucky Wesleyan athletics and enjoyed watching any sport in season. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rollin L. Bowen in 1976; her brothers John Vogel, Paul Vogel, and Al Vogel, and her sister Esther Hoops.

Mrs. Bowen is survived by her sons, John Bowen and his wife Cary of Franklin, KY, and Jerry Bowen and his wife M'Alys and Joe Bowen and his wife Vicki, all of Owensboro; her grandchildren Hunter Bowen (Lisa), Ben Bowen (Sabrina), Will Bowen (Fran), Lori Bowen, Leigh Lowe (Brian), Jennifer Bowen, Adam Bowen (Nicole) and Joy Herbert (Scott); 18 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Jim Vogel of Newburgh.

The funeral service for Mrs. Bowen will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Zion United Church of Christ. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the charity of ones choice.
