Norma Jean Bivins

Norma Jean Bivins, 92, of Owensboro passed away Friday, July 31, 2026, at the Carmel Home. She was born in Breckenridge County to the late Carl and Frances Mattingly Newby.

Devout in her Catholic Faith, Mrs. Bivins was a current member of Saints Joseph and Paul Catholic Church and previous member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. She was a recipient of the Sophia Award for her many years of volunteer work with the church.

Mrs. Bivins was a dedicated homemaker, fabulous cook, hard worker; and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was an avid quilter and seamstress, a UK basketball fan, former square dancer; and loved playing cards and bunco. Norma also traveled extensively with her husband Bob, family and friends. She traveled to every state in the country except Alaska. Mrs. Bivins will be dearly missed by many.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Charles Robert “Bob” Bivins and her siblings Ann Newby, Joe Newby, Helen Sherron, and Dorothy Woodward.

Those left to cherish her memory include children, Darrell Bivins of Texas, Gary Bivins, Paula Leet (Wendell) of Georgia, Charlotte Thompson (Mark), Rick Bivins (Lisa) and Connie Russelburg (Tim); grandchildren, Mallory Johns, Kelsey Anderson, Chad Gray, Drew Gray, Matt Gray, Adam Leet, Matt Leet, Lindsay Newton, Christopher Thompson, Ryan Thompson, Eric Thompson, Andrew Thompson, Melissa Bivins, Michelle Valego, Kristin Aull, John Bivins, Clare Bivins, Luke Bivins, Rachel Hamilton, Kaylee Russelburg, and Sam Russelburg; as well as 39 great-grandchildren; a twin sister, Lois Bowlds of McQuady, KY; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, August 5 at the Carmel Home Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Carmel Home Sisters and staff for the loving care provided to their mother. They also extend special thanks to the Home Health staff, especially Heather, for their loving care.
