Nancy L. Whitmer, 68, of Owensboro, passed away on September 12, 2026, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. Nancy was born on July 29, 1958, to the late Robert J. Whitmer and T. Lorene Taylor Whitmer.
After graduating from the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Health Science in Community Health, Nancy dedicated the next 35 years of her life to the service of others. She started out working in substance abuse services in the Lexington area, then moved back to Owensboro and worked for 10 years as a Case Manager for In-Home Support Services to adults with disabilities and the elderly. With the advent of education reform in Kentucky, Nancy went on to work as the FRYSC coordinator at Burns Middle School, where she remained for 20 years, then retiring in 2013 to care for her mother. Throughout her career she was actively involved in the community through her volunteer work with Big Brothers / Big Sisters, Special Olympics, the Community Dental Clinic, and “We the People”, as well as other programs and events.
She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, serving on the Administrative Council and the United Methodist Women.
Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Rev. Dr. Deborah Whitmer.
Those left to cherish her memory include her sister, Shelley Whitmer Bailey of Barkhamsted, CT; nephews, Evan (Nicole) Bailey of Barkhamsted, CT and Erick (Alisha) Bailey of Vernon CT; great niece, Vera Bailey and great nephew, Mateo Bailey; as well as many cousins and dear friends.
A graveside service for Nancy will be held at 2:45 p.m. Thursday September 17, 2026, at Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to The Goodfellows Club, c/o Messenger-Inquirer 1401 Frederica Street Owensboro, Kentucky 42301.
