Nancy (Carpenter) Calhoun, 78, of Owensboro, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2024, under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. She was born March 3, 1946, to the late William Ellis and Louise Carpenter. Nancy was proud of her accomplishments within her church and community organizations. She was a dedicated member of Settle Memorial Church, actively participating in the Golden Girls Bible Study and contributing to the Wednesday night cooking team. She also played a vital role in the United Methodist Women and held various positions as an active member of the Junior League of Owensboro. Notably, she was part of the Owensboro Country Club Pool Committee in the 1980s, further showcasing her commitment to community involvement. As co-owner of Big Independent Tobacco Warehouse and Scooters BBQ, along with several warehouses in North Carolina and South Georgia, Nancy demonstrated her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for supporting her local economy. She will be remembered for her open-door policy, welcoming everyone into her home and her heart. Her love for giving was evident in her active support of children's fundraisers and various charitable initiatives. She found profound joy in making a difference in the lives of others, embodying a spirit of giving that inspired those around her. An avid sports fan, Nancy showed her passion for her favorite teams with pride. She was an enthusiastic Indiana University supporter, rooted for Duke, and cheered for the Braves. Gardening was another of her loves, often inviting family and friends to help her tend to her plants, which was a testament to her engaging spirit and appreciation for hard work. Most of all, Nancy enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Nancy is preceded in death by her childhood sweetheart and husband, John Glenn Calhoun.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, John G. Calhoun II and Karen Calhoun-Clark (Brian); brother, Bill Carpenter (Brenda); sister-in-law, Jackie Calhoun Maddox (Tom); grandchildren, Orion Calhoun (Katie), Jay Calhoun, Will Calhoun (Shelby), and Forest Clark; great-grandchildren, Izzy, Addy, and Briggs; and special niece and nephews, Billy Carpenter, Stacey Castellini, Tom Maddox, Jeff Maddox, and Austin Maddox.
The funeral service for Nancy will be 2 PM Tuesday, November 19, at Settle Memorial Methodist Church. Visitation will be on Monday from 4 PM until 7 PM at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, and Tuesday 12 PM until time of service at the church. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
