Myrtle Bell Mercer, 88, daughter of the late Nealie and Lilly Travis, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2016. She was born March 24, 1928 in Muhlenburg County. Myrtle eventually came to reside in Owensboro with her now deceased husband of 55 years, Luther Mercer, Jr. Also preceding her in death were her sisters, Velma Travis and Lorine Phillips, and her son-in-law, Norman Frey.
Myrtle led a life that was deeply grounded in her faith in God which was evident in the person that she was as a daughter, wife, mother, friend, and citizen in general. She was a devoted and active member of Crosspointe Baptist Church and found great joy in spending time with her family, her beloved cousin Pauline Payne, and many cherished friends. She was a woman of impeccable grace and character, the epitome of kindness and acceptance, an exceptional caretaker and cook, and knew the reward of hard work as was evident in her professional career ( a retiree from General Electric who was recognized for her superior work ethic) and her general desire to never be idle. She never aspired to be the center of attention, but her genuine, compassionate, and quiet way always left her surrounded by those who loved her. She will be missed beyond measure.
She is survived by her son, James Neal Mercer and wife Judy of Lawrenceburg, and daughters, Deloris Williams and husband Jim and Patricia Frey, all of Owensboro, and Debbie Ingram and husband Jim of Murfreesboro, TN. Myrtle also leaves behind her brother, Howard Travis and wife Belle of Browder, 11 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, and many dear nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 18, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will follow in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 3:00-8:00 P.M. Tuesday and after 8:30 A.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
