Michael Goad, 72, passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. Born in Evansville, the son of the late William C. and Marjorie Pearson Goad, Michael graduated from Central High School in 1964 where he played basketball, ran track, was a pitcher on the baseball team and played clarinet in the Bears Marching Band. He earned a degree in Agriculture with a specialty in Soil Management from Purdue University. Mr. Goad was later a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. While at Purdue he met Susan Nelson and they married in March of 1969 following their January graduation. Upon graduation, Michael accepted a position with Monsanto in St. Louis, MO, later transferring to Greencastle, IN. A friend suggested that Michael's love for agriculture and mathematics would make him well suited for a career in agricultural banking. Shortly thereafter he joined Central Bank of Greencastle. From there his career took him to the First State Bank of Princeton, IL, where he also served on the school board. His next position was with the American National Bank in Bakersfield, CA. He was recruited to join Old National Bank in Madisonville, KY before moving to Owensboro with then Owensboro National Bank. Following his time there, he founded Riverfront Associates, serving as a business broker and commercial real estate agent. He later joined First Security Bank, from which he retired as Chief Credit Officer in 2013.
Michael was a committed member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church where he served on the Finance and Staff-Parish Relations committees. He was a member of the Owensboro Rotary Club, which recognized him as a Paul Harris Fellow and served as member of the board of directors of Girls, Inc. Never far from his agriculture roots, he enjoyed landscape design, which he put to good use in his yard and gardens. He loved all things automotive and indulged in a wide variety of vehicles over the years, followed motorsports closely, and was always ready to talk shop and offer advice if you happened to be in the market.
Mr. Goad is survived by his wife of 49 and 11/12 years, Susan Nelson Goad; his sons Michael Nelson Goad and his wife Dr. Lynn Carrico Goad of Stuttgart, Germany and Tyler Lowen Goad and his wife Kristin Brooks Goad of Honolulu, Hawaii; his grandchildren Grace Lowen Goad, Violet Brooks Goad, and Darcy Elizabeth Goad; a cousin and many close friends.
Michael was a man of strong religious faith, high moral standards, and a true patriot. He was immensely proud of his sons who both graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and are both currently serving as Commanders in the Navy; their wives who have served the country alongside them; and he truly cherished his granddaughters.
The service for Mr. Goad will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Monday at the church.
