Maxwell Lee Gabbert, 85, of Owensboro, passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at Hermitage Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was born May 16, 1930 in Hancock Co. to the late Virgil and Myrtle Adkins Gabbert. Max was retired after 32 years of service with the Owensboro Fire Department as an engineer. He also had worked for 30 years in construction with George Birkhead Builders. Max loved U.K. basketball, family reunions, and vacationing in Florida. During his stay at the Hermitage, he had met and made several friends. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He never met someone he didn't like and also loved buying and selling cars. Max was a Corporal in the U. S. Army during the Korean War era. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Ray Gabbert.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Billie Joyce Strayn Gabbert, children, Larry Gabbert and wife Carol, Terry Gabbert and wife Debbie, Tim Gabbert and wife Cheryl, and Lisa Gabbert Phillips and husband Robbie, grandchildren, Tony Gabbert, Jared Gabbert, Ashley Gabbert, Katie Thomason, Chad Raymer, Jeri Patricia Gabbert Patton, Jessica "Elizabeth" Gabbert, Zachary Gabbert, Rachel Gabbert, and Jordan Raymer, 20 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild, brothers, Gerald Gabbert and wife Lee of Ohio County, Gene Gabbert and wife Sue of Hammond, IN, and Wayne Gabbert and wife Daisy of Hebron, IN, and sisters, Charlotte Roberts and Sherlene Gabbert, both of Owensboro, and Judy Williams of Tennessee.
Services will be Noon Monday, February 1, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will follow in Owensboro Memorial Gardens with full military honors. Visitation will be from 1:00-6:00 P.M. Sunday and after 10:00 A.M. Monday at the funeral home.
