Maxie L. Barnes, Sr., 94, of Owensboro departed this life Friday May 27, 2016 at Signature Hillcrest Nursing Home. Mr. Barnes was born in Utica on October 9, 1921 to the late Clovis and Eva Morton Barnes. He was an Army veteran who served during WW II in the Asian-Pacific Theater. He was also a member of Pleasant Point Missionary Baptist Church where he sang in the choir. Mr. Barnes retired from the City of Owensboro where he worked at the Dugan Best Center in the early 1980's. In his leisure time, Mr. Barnes loved working in his garden, watching old cowboy movies, "In the Heat of the Night" and "One Life to Live" episodes.
Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Laura Eura Riley Barnes; step-son, Franklin Riley; five brothers, Robert, Edward and Junius Taylor, Donald and Lewis Barnes; two sisters, Charlesetta Simmons and Emma Acton.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory a son, Maxie "BaBa" Riley; two step-daughters, Thessalonia Mundy and Gloria Kelsey of Owensboro; one step-son, Joseph Riley of Mayfield; one grandchild Raymond Legg of Louisville; one sister, Catherine Acton and one brother, Horace Barnes both of Owensboro; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The service will be 12:00 PM Tuesday, May 31 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Tyrone Patrick officiating. Visitation will also be Tuesday from 11:00 till 12:00 PM. Burial with military honors will be at Pleasant Point Cemetery in Pleasant Ridge.
