Maple Mount Sister Mary Bertha Wethington, 103, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, died Dec. 2, 2009, at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 83rd year of religious life. She was the oldest member in the history of the community. She was a native of Clementsville in Casey County.
An educator for 59 years, she taught at St. Mary Magdalene School, Sorgho (1927-28), and Sts. Joseph and Paul, Owensboro (1950-51). She was principal of St. Pius Tenth School, Owensboro, 1968-71. She also taught in Leitchfield, in the Archdiocese of Louisville, and in Missouri. From 1972-78, she was coordinator of Saint Angela Educational Center, Louisville. She used her talents as a gifted seamstress to craft many beautiful quilts, and she loved to travel with her family. She retired to the motherhouse in 2001.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Louise O'Rourke, Creve Coeur, Mo., nieces and nephews, and the members of her religious community.
The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mount Saint Joseph, where visitation will begin Friday at 4 p.m., with a wake service following at 6:30 p.m.
