Mary Lou Phillips

January 14, 1905 — May 20, 2003

Mary Lou Phillips, 98, of Atlanta, formerly of Owensboro, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at her home. Mrs. Phillips was born in Water Valley, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Walter and Delia Lovelace Jones Gossum. Her husband Stanley Phillips preceded her in death in 1969.

Mrs. Phillips was a graduate of the Tennessee College for Women in Murfressboro, TN. She retired as secretary of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church, of which she was a member, after 30 years of service. Mrs. Phillips taught the same Sunday school class for 52 years, which is now named the Mary Lou Phillips Class in her honor. She had been a member of the Married Ladies Reading Club and United Methodist Women.

Mrs. Phillips is survived by two sisters, June Wilson of Murray and Mayzelle Williams of Atlanta, and two nieces, Sandra Browning of Atlanta and Patsy Massey of Murray.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. Friends may call at Glenn Funeral Home from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
