Mary Cecilia "Gran Gran" Medley, died peacefully on Monday, Oct. 1, 2012 surrounded by family in her home in Owensboro. She was 101.
Cecilia was the daughter of Marybelle Murphy and William Meigs O'Bryan. She was born on Nov. 11, 1910 in Owensboro and was baptized in St. Paul's Church. Twenty-five years later, she married John Abell Medley, Sr. in the same church.
Shortly after they married, the couple rented an apartment in an old plantation house in Owensboro. Eventually the two purchased the historic building and turned it into their home. There they raised their family and entertained hundreds. Cecilia graciously hosted many family gatherings, as well as civic and charitable events at her home.
Cecilia and her husband visited every state and traveled the world together - making stops on all of the continents except Antarctica.
A devout Catholic, she regularly attended mass and other church devotionals. She was a regular volunteer at the Wendell Foster Center and the Help Office. She also served the community as a member of the Altar Society, the Legion of Mary, the Cotillion Club (now the Junior League of Owensboro), the Hospital Guild and the Brescia College Board of Trustees.
Seemingly tireless and forever young, Cecilia started playing golf at the age of 65. She had a great passion for the game and continued to play well into her eighties. An excellent player, Cecilia also enjoyed playing cards games.
Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her large family. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister and daughter.
Cecilia had nine children: Mary Wathen (William, dec.) Foor, John Abell (Mary) Medley, Jr., Sarah Jane (Jerry) Kuntz, William Meigs (Carol, dec.) Medley, Thomas Aquinas (Susan) Medley, III, Frankie Beth (John) McNulty, Cecilia Ellen Accurso, Benedict Francis, dec. (Denise) Medley, III, and Daniel Spalding (Kathy) Medley. She is survived by eight of her nine children, 29 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and 8 great, great-grandchildren.
Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday and after 8:30 AM Thursday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening. Burial will be in Mater Dolorosa.
The family requests expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Wendell Foster Center, the Help Office, Hospice of Western Kentucky, or the Opportunity Center.
