Mary C. Jungmann

Mary Carter Jungmann, 88, of Philpot, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2026, at her home.

She was born April 30, 1938, in Zanesville, Ohio, to the late Bruce and Geneva Carter. Mary received her Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from the University of Kansas and remained a Jayhawks fan for the rest of her life, cheering her basketball team on at Beef O’Bradys where she was a beloved regular.

Mary was married to her husband, William L. "Bill" Jungmann, for 61 years before he passed in 2022. They were world travelers to Australia, Europe, Alaska and island after island but home was just as important. Sunday dinners happened every week for the whole of her sons' childhoods. She was at every soccer game, rugby match, and t-ball game, and certainly let the refs know what she thought.

The family moved to Ireland for seven years in the late 1970s and early 1980s, where Mary trained as a classical soprano and earned her teaching degree from the Trinity College of Music in London. She performed around Owensboro and sang for church choirs for years afterward. At home, she filled the house with Irish tenors, Kiri Te Kanawa, Maria Callas. She was also a devoted quilter, making quilts for each of her children when they married and for each grandchild when they arrived, a record of the family in fabric. She was active for many years in the local P.E.O. women's philanthropic organization.

Mary loved Christmas, the decorating, the baking and giving and getting of presents, without embarrassment about either. She loved reading with her grandchildren, and maintained a long-running, entirely serious debate with her granddaughter Megan over which one of them was the real princess. The matter was never resolved to either party's satisfaction.

Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Bill Carter.

Surviving are her three sons, Scott Jungmann and wife Becky of Killiney, Ireland, Steve Jungmann and wife Beth of Andover, Massachusetts, and Dan Jungmann and wife Nori of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and eight grandchildren, Zac, Megan, Aoife, Matthew, Fiona, Claire, Grace, and Nick.
