Mary Agnes “Aggie” Johnson Powers, 88, of Owensboro passed away Sunday, September 15, 2024, at her home and under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky. A native of Hancock County, Aggie was born April 21, 1936, to the late Harvey Johnson and Marie Burke Johnson. Raised on a working farm, she learned the value of hard work and perseverance. Failure was not an option and a strong work ethic was revered above all. Agnes had just celebrated her 70th wedding anniversary with her devoted husband, Don. Together they raised three daughters, instilling values of faith, integrity, and hard work into their lives. A woman of deep faith, she was an active member of St. Pius X parish for over sixty-five years serving as a Eucharistic Minister, member of the Bereavement Team, and contributing to various fundraising efforts. She also worked in the parish office for many years. In recognition and appreciation of service to the church, she was honored with the Sophia Award by the Bishop in 2019. Professionally Aggie worked as a bookkeeper for the United Steel Workers Union at Green River Steel from 1972-1986.
Aggie was a devoted grandmother. This role brought her immense joy and her grandchildren were blessed by her wisdom, kindness, and endless affection. After raising her family, Agnes enjoyed traveling with Don, frequently visiting their daughters out of state. Her favorite trips were to Hawaii and going west to see the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, and San Francisco. She was a thoughtful and conscientious person, maintaining life long friendships and always remembering to send a card or note for special occasions.
In addition to her parents, Aggie also was preceded in death by her older brother James "Jimmie" Johnson and her sister Lois Johnson Davis.
Those left to cherish her memory include husband, Don Powers of Owensboro; three daughters, Mary Donna Knipe (Steve) of Richmond, VA, Marcy Powers of Atlanta, and Cindy Powers of Washington DC; four grandchildren, Crysta Morris (Paul) of Owensboro, Aaron Holloway (Ann), Alden Knipe both of Atlanta, Mason Grisso of Richmond, VA; three great grandchildren, Kaely Holloway, Jackson Morris, and Trace Morris; several nieces and nephews; and dear friends Liz Parker, Delores Turnage, Bettie Wagner, Mildred Smith, and Marian Jones who supported her through her journey.
The funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am Monday, September 23 at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Visitation will take place Sunday from 3:00 until 6:00 pm with prayers at 5:30 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will follow at Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the St. Pius X Parrish Relief Fund.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky for their compassionate care and support during this difficult time. You have our deepest gratitude.
