Mary Helen (Wilder) Horn , 87, formerly of Owensboro, Kentucky, passed away on March 27, 2012 at The Neighborhood Skilled Nursing Facility in Somerset, Kentucky. She was born in Mercer County, Kentucky to the late Henry and Sarah (Johnson) Wilder.
Mary Helen was a 1943 graduate of Versailles High School in Versailles, Kentucky and earned her B.S. in Home Economics from the University of Kentucky in 1947.
She first worked as a 4-H Agent for the UK Cooperative Extension in Fayette County, Kentucky, then as a hospital dietician in Urbana, Illinois before becoming a home economics teacher in La Grange, Illinois. Mary Helen's main focus was being a dedicated and loving wife and mother to her family.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Owensboro and lived a life centered on her faith in Jesus Christ. She was a Bible scholar and taught women's Sunday school classes at Owensboro First Baptist, First Baptist in Richmond, KY and Clarendon Hills Baptist in Clarendon Hills, IL over a period of 35 years. Until she moved to Owensboro she primarily taught and acted as a mentor to younger women. After coming to Owensboro she taught the senior women. Mary Helen had been an officer and active member of Richmond Garden Club.
Mary Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 61 years, Dr. Lindsey H. Horn, Jr. in 2009 and 3 brothers, Ralph, Carroll and Marion Wilder.
She is survived by 3 grateful and loving children, Linda (Monty) Gover of Somerset, Mary Kathryn (Reggie) Zears of Naperville, IL and Steven Horn of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Preston Gover of Washington, D.C., Lauren Gover (Joe) Van Zee of Frankfort, KY, Grant Gover of Somerset, KY, Rachel Zears, Brandon Zears both of Naperville, IL, Andrew Horn and Robert Horn both of Dallas, TX; a great granddaughter, Esther Helen Van Zee; a brother, Horace (Janet) Wilder of Louisville, KY; nieces and nephews; a sister in law, Clara Horn (Carl) Hawes of Owensboro and Faustine Burton of Somerset, KY, her beloved caregiver for three years.
The funeral service will be held at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 2:00 pm. Dr. Paul Strahan will officiate. Burial will be at Yellow Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday from 12 Noon until 2 pm at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Yellow Creek Cemetery or Bibles may be donated to Gideon's International.
