Mary Lois Hagan, 88, surrounded by her family, passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital.
Mary Lois was born on February 2, 1928 to Joe and Rosa "Rosie" Lanham, and was raised in Knottsville, Kentucky. She was the eldest of seven children; Mary Lois, Bobby, Diddle, Joan, Doodlebug, Doreen, and Gene. She always liked to say she was a coal miner's daughter. She would tell the story of getting lost in the mine that Joe dug on his land, just over the hill from St. Lawrence Church.
In the late 1940's Mary Lois moved into Owensboro and met the love of her life, Wilfred Hagan, where they worked together at McAtees department store downtown. It was also during this time period that she and Wilfred met Frank & Skippy Hayden, Tom & Rose Danhauer and Hugh and Helen Riney. This incredible group of friends stayed together for their entire lives. Mary Lois also enjoyed playing Canasta with a special group of women for over 60 years. She had the friendship of a lifetime with her next door neighbor, Nelda Maddox. Mary Lois was the kind of person whom you would want as a friend for life.
Mary Lois and Wilfred were married for over 65 years and had seven children: Michael, Karen, Debbie, Mary Susan, Pat, Stephen, and her baby Teresa Marlene. Mary Lois' calling was to be a mother. She helped raise her younger siblings as a teenager, then raised her own children, and after that started babysitting - helping to raise numerous children from newborns to 5 or 6 year olds. She just absolutely loved babies. When a baby was around, her eyes would light up and she would beam a smile.
Mary Lois was very active in her church, Our Lady of Lourdes. She had served as a lector at mass and she and Wilfred also served together as hospitality ministers until they were in their 80's. Over the course of twenty years, she helped sponsor several people through the RCIA Program. Mary Lois was faithful to bake cookies at the regular RCIA meetings and was fondly known as the "Cookie Lady". They also enjoyed working the bingo stand at church picnics.
Mary Lois radiated love and will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her son Michael Hagan in 1969; parents, Joseph and Rosa Lanham; her brother Robert Lanham; her son-in-law Jerry Bartlett; and her brother-in-law, Alvin Payne.
