Mary Ellen Hagan, 79, of Owensboro passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. The Daviess County native was born July 24, 1946, as one of six children to the late Leonard Durbin and Mary Head Durbin. She enrolled in Brescia College and earned two bachelor’s degrees in Basic Business/English and Religious Studies. Mary was skilled in many areas working as an assistant librarian, plumbers helper, retail clerk, ESL tutor, substitute teacher, and finally retiring as a receptionist for chiropractor, Dr. Eric Davis. Most of her life revolved around her family and church parishes, St. Ann Catholic Church in Morganfield where she was Lector and served on the Bereavement Committee and Blessed Mother Catholic Church in Owensboro. Mary was very active in the Cursillo Movement since 1990, being the Lay Director for three years.
In addition to her parents, Mary was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Leo Hagan Sr. in 2021 and her brother, Leonard Martin Durbin.
Those left to cherish her memory include her four children, William “Billy” (Barbara) Hagan Jr. of Owensboro, Brian (Laurie) Hagan of Morganfield, Dennis (Michelle) Hagan, and Janet (Tim Hamilton) Carter also of Owensboro; twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren; five siblings, Linda (Robert) Shoemaker, David (Sheila) Durbin, James (Cindy) Durbin, Richard (Mary) Durbin, and Connie (Danny) Thompson; numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral Mass will be 11:00 am Monday, December 22 at Blessed Mother Catholic Church. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 until 6 pm with prayers at 5:30 and Monday from 9 until 10 am at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. A private burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery at a later date.
