Mary “Evelyn” Mattingly, 93, of Owensboro, passed away Sunday, October 6, 2024, at Signature HealthCare at Hillcrest. She was born October 5, 1931, to the late Hilary LeRoy and Willie Florence Thomas.
Evelyn was a devout catholic and long-time member of Precious Blood Catholic Church. She married Jim Mattingly on January 24, 1953, where they had a loving, 70-year marriage and raised four children together. Evelyn was a loving Memaw to her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Simple things brought her joy; a phone call, a card, pictures of the kids, a visit, big hugs & kisses, spending a day with her sisters, decorating for holiday gatherings, sitting on the front porch with her husband, and especially cooking big meals that consisted of a favorite dish for a grandchild or two. She showed her physical strength, faith, and will-power every time she recovered from one of her numerous surgeries. Evelyn was a gardener, a game show watcher, puzzle worker, and could finish a word-find book in no time! Her legacy will live on in the cross-stitch baby quilts she made for each grandchild and great-grandchild.
The kind of love she felt for us was a love without condition. She may not have approved of everything we did, and may not have liked some of our decisions, but she didn’t lecture and didn’t judge. She kept loving us, letting us know she was there if we needed her.
In addition to her parents, Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, James “Jim” Mattingly; son, Jeff Mattingly; sisters, Margaret Bickett, Kathleen Phillips, and Dorothy Louise Thomas; brothers, Frank Thomas, Raymond Thomas, Jim Thomas, and Bill Thomas; brother-in-law, Paul Payne; daughter-in-law, Chrisie Burr Mattingly; and son-in-law, Jerry Jackson.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Gayle Mattingly Jackson, Rhonda Mattingly Beck (Richard) and Greg Mattingly (Angie Crowe); sisters, Sue Thomas and Martina Blandford; brother, Bob Thomas; sister-in-law, Carol Ann Payne; grandchildren, James Edward Jackson, Russ Michael Jackson (Katherine), Lindsay Mattingly (Cindy), Shannon Clark Phillips (Karl), and Melissa Clark Smith (Jake), Michael Mattingly, Josh Mattingly (Kim), Kandice Burr Gray (Bobby), and Ryan Burr; as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Evelyn will be 12 PM Friday, October 11, at Precious Blood Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 10 AM until time of service at the church.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Precious Blood building fund, 3306 Fenmore St, Owensboro, KY 42301.
