Mary Margaret ''Mimi'' Mitchell Davis, 48, of 1540 Griffith Ave., Owensboro, wife of Dr. Brett C. Davis, died on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System after a long and valiant struggle with cancer. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church.
She was born to H. Maurice and Elizabeth S. Mitchell of Little Rock, Ark., on July 10, 1957. She was a graduate of the Little Rock Public School System and Centenary College of Louisiana. She did post-graduate work at the University of Texas and obtained a master's degree from Vanderbilt University and a doctorate of philosophy from Louisiana State University. She was a public school teacher for several years. After receiving her doctorate, she taught at Centenary College, made presentations at several national educational meetings and co-authored a number of articles published in national educational journals.
She was reluctant to leave her native city when her husband accepted an affiliation with a group of Owensboro physicians. When the family moved here, she fell in love with Owensboro and its people and immediately became very active in rendering community service. Her many contributions to the community include service on the Messenger-Inquirer's board of contributors, co-chair of the Greater Owensboro Education Alliance, president of the Daviess County Medical Society Alliance, president of the Kentucky Medical Association Alliance, a member of the Citizens Committee on Education and a member of the board of the Elizabeth Munday Senior Center and H.L. Neblett Community Center.
She maintained an active interest in political affairs. She was the fourth woman elected to the Owensboro City Commission and the first woman to run for mayor of Owensboro.
In addition to her loving husband and her parents, she is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Stockley Davis, Margaret Hart ''Maggie'' Davis and Mary Maude Davis. She is also survived by a sister, Nancy Elizabeth Mitchell; and two brothers, H. Maurice Mitchell Jr. and David Stockley Mitchell, all of Little Rock.
Following a private burial, a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at First Presbyterian Church, 1328 Griffith Ave., Owensboro. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Daviess County Medical Society Alliance, DCMSA Scholarship Fund, P/O Box 282, Owensboro, KY 42302 or an organization of the donor's choice.
