Mary Pollitt Posey Crowder was born in Mason County, Ky. on June 1, 1913. She was the third child of Oscar and Ola Bullock Pollitt.
She taught in the Owensboro School System, retiring after twenty-five years, serving as a fifth grade teacher at Washington Elementary (Sutton), then as a guidance counselor at Foust Jr. High School.
She attended Transylvania University and received degrees from Kentucky Wesleyan and Western Ky. University. Mary was a life-long learner who had a tremendous concern for her students' welfare and success. She seized teachable moments for her students and believed in the power of learning through discovery. She loved keeping up with former students and always took delight in hearing of their successes and life experiences.
Mary was a member of Settle Memorial Methodist Church and the Mary Lou Phillips Sunday School Class. Mary served the class as president in the past and considered the women in the class among her dearest friends.
She was also a member and past regent of the General Evan Shelby Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma, Owensboro Educational Association, National Education Association, and a past member of American University Women. Mary was also a past member of the Owensboro Symphony Guild.
Mary loved to travel and was a member of Owensboro's first Friendship Force, traveling to England and to Italy in following years. She kept in close contact with the family she stayed with in England and enjoyed hosting them in her home as well.
She had been living close to family in Duluth, Ga., since October of 2010, but longed for Owensboro daily. Kentucky was her home and thoughts of her friends were never out of her heart.
Mary was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Blake Posey who died in 1988, her second husband George Crowder in 2011, a granddaughter, Susan Elizabeth Posey of Murray Ky. who passed away in 1990.
