Mary Howard Dempsey Bruner, 73, of Owensboro died Wednesday April 25, 2018 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. Ms. Brunner was born April 16, 1945 in Greenville to the late Howard Leslie Dempsey and Clyde Wheeler Parrish Dempsey. Mary received her BA degree in Education from Murray State University and her MA from Xavier University. She taught English and Special Education at Owensboro High School where she received the "Teacher of the Year" award. Later in her career, she worked in Administration at the central office. Mary, along with best friends, Janie Robinson and Carol Alvey, were co-founders of Spay-A-Stray Owensboro which has spayed over 3500 cats.
Those left to cherish her memory include her brother, Rodney Dempsey and wife Mary Lu of Louisville; sister, Susan Faye Dempsey Gudorf and husband Dennis; former husband, Sherman Bruner; nieces and nephews, Jonathan Dennis Gudorf (Izzy Mair), Frank Leslie Dempsey (Sue), Tom Dempsey; great nieces, Lucy Marie and Patty Dempsey; and many cousins.
Services will be 5:00 pm Wednesday, May 2 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Myke Templeton officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until time of service. Ladies are invited to wear hats in honor of Mary Howard.
