Mary Bonnie Joyce Fitzgerald Gray, 87, of Owensboro, went to be with the Lord on September 6, 2024, while under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. Mary was born on May 23, 1937, in Owensboro to Leonard E. and Lillian Fulkerson Fitzgerald. During World War II, her mother was left to care for the family while her father served in the armed forces. Mary took on the responsibility of helping to care for her younger siblings and assisting with household duties.
Bonnie was a woman of deep faith and unwavering devotion to her Catholic beliefs. From an early age, her love for music shone through as she sang in the Saints Joe and Paul Catholic Church Choir, a passion she carried well into her later years until her health no longer allowed. She also dedicated over a decade to singing in the Immaculate Parish Choir. Bonnie's devotion to the Blessed Mother was profound, and she played a pivotal role in starting a prayer group honoring Saint Padre Pio.
Her devotion extended to her family, especially to her beloved husband, Charles Caswell Gray, who served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam and Korean Wars, retiring after 20 years of service. Bonnie's love and commitment to her children were equally strong. She supported them wholeheartedly in all their endeavors and raised them with the same dedication to the Catholic faith that guided her life.
Bonnie was a true people person, always looking out for others and using her sharp sense of humor to lighten any situation and bring comfort to those around her. She enjoyed crocheting, playing the slots, and relaxing with her favorite shows, Judge Judy and Gunsmoke. Bonnie was a passionate bowler who competed in several leagues and earned numerous trophies throughout the years.
In her later years, Bonnie was blessed with her family's loving support and care. Her daughter, Theresa Gray, took exceptional care of her throughout her illness, providing her with comfort and compassion during that time. She was also fortunate to have the companionship of her great-niece, Cathy Dickens, during this time.
Bonnie's life was defined by her deep faith, devotion to family, and her ability to bring joy to others through her humor and kindness. She will be remembered for the love she shared, the strength of her spirit, and the lasting impact she made on everyone who knew her. Her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Charles Caswell Gray; son, Charles Patrick Gray; and siblings, Darrell, Leonard "Juni", Betty, and Stephen.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Theresa Gray and Matthew Gray (Nicole); grandchildren, Christopher Abshier, Sabrina Gray, Nicholas Gray, Andrew Gray, and Daniel Gray; great-grandchildren, Charles and Oliver Abshier; and her sister, Audrey Boarman (Tom), and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral Mass for Mary Bonnie Gray will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, September 9, 2024, at Sts. Joe and Paul Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm Sunday, September 8, 2024, at Glenn Funeral Home, with prayer at 4:00 pm and from 8:30 am until 9:30 am Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow Mass in Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Sts. Joe and Paul Catholic Church or The Heartford House.
