Mary Smeathers Bennett, 92, formerly of 2327 Hayden Bridge Road, Owensboro, passed away on Monday April 19, 2010 at Hillcrest Healthcare Center. She was born on Nov. 17, 1917 in Daviess Co., Ky. to the late William and Dell Thixton Smeathers. Her father (William) was a decendant of the first settlers of Yellowbanks which is now Owensboro. She was a homemaker and a member of Sorgho Baptist Church which she loved very much. She enjoyed raising strawberries and sold many of them to Kresge's which they used for their delicious strawberry pies. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Reeder Bennett on March 10, 1991, and three brothers and sisters, Thelma Smeathers, William Smeathers, and Nancy Bivens.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Kay Knight and husband Ken of Owensboro and Leslie Fay Lanham and husband Leonard of Shelbyville, Ky., five grandchildren, Barry Sandefur of Beech Grove, Kevin Sandefur of Frankfort, Ricky Lanham, Jeremy Lanham, and Monica Warford, all of Shelbyville, 19 great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren, a sister, Eva Couty of Carlsbad, CA, and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 21, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with burial following in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be after 10:00 A.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sorgho Baptist Church.
