Sister Mary Ellen Barrette, 87, of 405 W. Parrish Ave., passed away Monday, June 4, 2018, at Morgantown Care & Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Essex Junction, Vermont, to the late G.W. Barrette and Marguerite Kennedy Barrette. She has been a missionary for 63 years as a Glenmary Sister, having begun in 1955. She served the home missions in Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Kentucky, Texas, and Missouri. She enjoyed working with Religious Education, visiting nursing home residents, and she oversaw the Catholic Thrift Shop in Georgia for many years. She wanted to be remembered "as not only a good friend and concerned person who cared about everyone and wanted what was best for them, but also a dedicated missionary who did her best with gifts she had and as a person who appreciated others and their special gifts."
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth Barrette, Susan Barrette, and Shirley Bowers. She is survived by a brother, George Barrette, and sister, Peggy Alexander; and her Glenmary Sisters community.
Funeral Mass will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, June 12 at St. Stephen Cathedral. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 11, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with a wake service at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
