Martha Bumm Payne, 97, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2025, at the Carmel Home, with her children by her side. Born on April 4, 1927, Martha Lucy Bumm and her twin sister Martina were daughters of Robert F. and Elizabeth Wink Bumm. Raised on the family farm in Stanley, Kentucky, she worked alongside her two sisters and five brothers, while her sisters Betty and Helen managed the household kitchen. Martha completed her education at St. Francis Academy.
Known for her kind nature, quiet demeanor, and constant smile, Martha had a passion for flowers, gardening, and birdwatching. She cherished her time spent with her sisters in a quilting group that contributed their creations to charitable organizations. Martha also enjoyed NASCAR and wrestling but found her greatest joy in being with her family.
A devout Catholic, Martha was deeply committed to the rosary and was a faithful member of the Catholic Church. She and her husband Tom initially belonged to Immaculate Church before joining the Blessed Mother Catholic Church.
Martha was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Thomas L. Payne, and her son Richard J. Payne, as well as her parents and siblings: Betty Booker, Helen Bumm, Martina Vecchio, Dorothy Ward, and brothers Nick, Bob, Bill, Martin, and Les Bumm.
Her surviving family includes her children: Steve (Beverly) Payne, Shelia Payne, Mark Payne, and Tina Mattingly, all from Owensboro. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Elizabeth (Miles) Mallette, Aaron Payne, and Zach (Martina) Payne; five great-grandchildren: Stephen and William Eaves, Lucy, Aurora, and Leo Payne; and three sisters-in-law: Betty Bumm, Nancy Bumm, and Mary Crichton.
