Mark “Rock” Rickard, 65, of Owensboro passed away Friday, December 20, 2024, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. The Daviess County native was born August 26, 1959, to Bobby Jo Rickard and Marion “Jackie” Sapp Rickard. Mark was a devoted son, a beloved brother, a caring husband, and a father who loved his daughter with every beat of his heart. Those who had the pleasure of knowing him often remarked that Mark knew no stranger. His genuine spirit and warm personality earned him a vast circle of friends, a testament to the kindness he shared with everyone he met. Mark dedicated 18 years of his life to Green Coal Company before moving to Ragu (Mizkan) where he retired in 2019. He was a longtime member of Windridge Country Club and First Baptist Church.
From an early age, Mark’s passion for baseball ignited on the fields of Southern Little League, where he played with determination and grit. He was part of a team that came incredibly close to the Little League World Series, falling just short in a heart-wrenching game. But that setback did not deter him. Mark continued to chase his love for the game, earning accolades and recognition throughout his youth. Mark graduated from Owensboro High School, class of 1978. He played varsity baseball in middle school, and during his time at OHS, he led his team to become state champions in 1977 and was a runner-up in 1978. Mark was a multi-talented athlete, lettering in basketball, football, track, and of course, baseball. His collegiate career took him to Indiana State, Wabash Community College, and the Louisville Cardinals, where he continued to excel on the diamond. After transitioning from baseball, Mark embraced the sport of softball, competing in both men’s and co-ed leagues.
Whether on the baseball field, golf course, or in his deer stand, Mark approached every endeavor with unmatched enthusiasm and determination. It is said that he achieved at least three holes-in-one on three different courses, truly a testament to his skill and dedication. Above all, Mark loved the great outdoors, cherishing the moments spent with friends, family, and teammates. Mark was blessed with a lifetime of close friends. Though he may no longer be with us, his legacy of kindness, passion, and unwavering friendship will forever resonate in our hearts.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Bobby Jo Rickard; father-in-law, Melvin Pagan; nephew, Blake Moore; paternal grandparents, Webb & Evalee Rickard and maternal grandparents, A.O. & Sudie Sapp.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 39 ½ years, Sharon Pagan Rickard; daughter, Lauren McGregor (Davis) of Cadiz; stepdaughter, Brande Chase of Owensboro and her daughter, Molly; mother, Marion “Jackie” Sapp Rickard and sister, Dana Rickard both of Sarasota, Florida; nephew, Eric Moore (Crystin) of Bowling Green; mother-in-law, Pat Pagan of Owensboro; brother-in-law, Mickey Pagan (Cindy) of Mooresville, Indiana; nieces Hannah Golibersuch (Ryan) of Nicholasville and Abbie Prater (Aaron) of Georgetown; several aunts and cousins.
