Marjorie Weaver Slack, 79, died peacefully on April 23, 2015 at the Carmel Home. Margie was born on September 23, 1935, in Utica, KY, the oldest child of the late Eugene and Eugenia Wright Weaver. She was a life-long Catholic and was educated by the Ursuline Sisters from grade one through college. She was a graduate of Mt. Saint Joseph Academy in 1953 and Brescia College in 1957.
Margie valued her faith and education and lived each to the fullest. She loved God with all her heart and exemplified this in her determination to do the right thing even when it meant making tough decisions. God blessed her with a sense of the needs of friends and family and she was an inspiration to us all. Margie prayed the rosary every day and when she could no longer handle the beads she used her fingers. In 2008 she received the Apostolic Blessing of Pope Benedict XVI.
Margie was a gifted writer and used her talents while in high school and college as a feature writer and editor of the school newspapers. She even wrote and directed a high school play, and a number of articles which were published in the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer. To her regret she never wrote "her book."
Margie was a devoted alumna of The Mount and Brescia. She was president of the Mt. Alumni Association for six years and rarely missed the annual reunions. She was devoted to Brescia and was a charter member of the President's Civic Council and a charter member of the President's Advisory Council. In 1992 Margie was recipient of the Father Charles Saffer Alumni Hall of Fame Award for exemplifying the ideals of Brescia College. In 2001 she received the Maple Leaf Award from Mt. Saint Joseph Academy in recognition of being an outstanding alumna. In 2006 she was inducted in Brescia University's Gallery of Distinguished Alumni. She is also a proud Kentuckian and is a Kentucky Colonel.
In 1971 Margie made a Catholic Cursillo weekend and made the movement her primary apostolate for many years, serving on many teams and local, regional, and national secretariats. She was an active member of Immaculate Parish as Eucharistic Minister, lector, and high school CCD instructor. She served on the parish council and was coordinator for Renew and was a Renew group leader several times. She served on the Owensboro Catholic High School Board as the city churches representative. She was a charter member of the Owensboro Catholic Cemetery Board on the finance committee.
Margie retired from Har-Ken Oil Co. in 1997 after a thirty-eight year career. She was a devoted employee and was highly regarded for her work ethic, diligence, and accuracy.
She was a voracious reader, having read hundreds of books and articles. One of her favorite authors is Fr. Andrew Greeley. She read her Bible and the Liturgy of the Hours every day. Margie enjoyed family gatherings, of which there were many, and eating and sharing with all. Although not a sports fan, she never missed a game or other event in which her grandchildren participated, traveling countless miles to do so. She loved card games and other games with family and friends and was an accomplished bridge player and lucky poker player. She liked watching TV, especially Wheel of Fortune, TheView, and the Tonight Show. She also enjoyed movies and has seen many hundreds of them.
Margie is survived by her husband of 55 years, Robert (Bob) Slack, her daughter and son-in-law, Jeannie and Jeff Howard, and grandchildren Michael and Megan Howard, all of Owensboro. Other survivors include sister and brother-in-law Mildred S. and Robert J. Gilles, of Owensboro, her brothers and sisters, Dorothy W.
