Marian Boerner Lewis

Marian Boerner Lewis, 83, of Owensboro, daughter of the late Linton and Mary Mattingly Boerner, died Sunday, January 20, 2008 at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born in Louisville and moved to Owensboro with her husband Forrest and their children in 1950. That same year, she became a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church, where she taught first grade Sunday school for 15 years. She was superintendent of the Children's Division Bible School, and for six years taught classes for the Bible school teachers of the Owensboro Conference of the United Methodist Church. For thirty years, she was Director of the Settle Memorial Kindergarten and Pre-School Program, the latter of which she helped start in 1961, during which time she also taught. She retired from both positions in 1986.

Mrs. Lewis was president of the Newcomer's Club in 1955. She was president of the Newton Parrish PTA, Southern Junior High PTA, City Council PTA, and was Honorary President of the National PTA. She was President of the Art Museum Alliance and the Owensboro Symphony Auxiliary. She served two terms as president of both the Science Museum Guild and The Woman's Club of Owensboro, and was named Outstanding Club Woman in District 2 of the Kentucky Federation of Woman's Clubs.

Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Friendship Force, on the board of directors of the Mary Kendall Home and Friends of the Children, and was a member of the Administrative Board of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the Lady Kentucky Colonels.

Mrs. Lewis is survived by her husband of 61 years, Forrest Lewis, Jr.; a son, Forrest Lewis, III and his wife Kendra of Indianapolis; a daughter, Rebecca McCarty and her husband Tom of Orland Park, IL; and grandchildren Melissa Lewis of Indianapolis, Michael McCarty of Traverse City, MI, and Shannon McCarty of San Francisco. She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Lewis, in 1990. She was an inspiration and an "angel" to friends and family, and was loved by all who knew her.

Services are 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home and from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Entombment will be in Christ Chapel Mausoleum of Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the memorial funds of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church or the Mary Kendall Home.
