Margaret Flaherty Smith, 104, of Owensboro, passed away January 21, 2016 under the loving care of the Carmel Home. Mrs. Smith was born November 18, 1911 in Owensboro to the late Ritchie B. and Sue Ella Buckman Flaherty. She was known by all as an avid game player, especially Bridge, where she achieved the distinguished level of "Life Master" at the age of 78. Mrs. Smith graduated from St. Frances Academy and attended Katherine Spalding College in Louisville. She was also a member of the Altar Society at St. Stephens Cathedral and worked in the library at Owensboro Catholic High School.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Bubby Smith in 1971; brothers, Anthony, Alva, and Paul Flaherty; sister, Elizabeth Massie; son, Bobby Smith in 1945; son-in-law, Thomas Immer.
Survivors include her son, David Clark and his wife Kathleen of Old Saybroook, CT; daughter, Mary Flaherty Immer and her fiancé, Wayne Eury of Hagerstown, MD; grandchildren, Christine Papa and husband Tony, Jennifer Rosebeck and husband Greg, Paula Theophilos and husband Yianni, Garrett Immer and wife Jennifer, Robert Immer and wife Diana, Charles Immer, Michael Immer and wife Laura; great grandchildren, Grace Papa, Owen and Reese Rosebeck, Lea and Anna Theophilos, Ariel Immer; nephews Dick Flaherty and Charlie Massie; niece Susan Murray.
The family would extend special appreciation to the staff at Carmel Home especially the Infirmary nurses and aides.
The service will be Tuesday, January 26 at 12:00 PM at St. Stephen Cathedral with Fr. Jerry Riney officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 3:00 to 7:00 with prayers at 6:30 PM and from 10:00 AM Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Private interment to follow at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery.
