Margaret Bernadette Howard, 85, of Owensboro, passed away in her sleep on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at the Carmel Home. She was born January 21, 1932 in Daviess Co. to the late Joseph D. and Mary Carrico Coomes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Everett Howard, whom she was married to for almost 50 years; sisters, Mary Joe Dant-Coomes, Genevieve Sharpton; brother, Conroy Coomes; half-sisters, Ella Powers, Waltrude Higdon, Myrtle Cable, Ethel Coomes, and Evelyn Mattingly; and half-brothers, Jake Coomes and Gerald Coomes.
Everyone who met her was impressed by her cheerful personality, and she always helped anyone in need. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother who brought her children up in a home on Ridgewood Street where she lived for 52 years before moving in to the Carmel Home. Bernadette was a dedicated member of the Catholic community and attended Precious Blood Catholic Church where she was involved in many activities such as serving as a Eucharistic minister, leading bible study, helping at fish fries and picnics, and she was a member of the Daughters of Isabella's Our Lady of Perpetual Help Circle Chapter 241. She also was a regular volunteer at the St. Benedict's Shelter for homeless men and faithfully attended the perpetual adoration at the Carmel Home. She enjoyed playing bingo, card games, traveling, and spending time with her family.
Surviving are her sons, Timothy Gerard (Jamie) Howard and John Stephen (Marilen) Howard; two granddaughters, Angela Howard and Nicki Howard; sisters, Theresa Oberaitis and Cecilia Farrell; and a brother, Thomas Coomes.
Services will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 28, at Precious Blood Catholic Church with burial following in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory from 3:00-8:00 P.M. Thursday with prayers at 5:00 P.M. and from 8:30-9:30 A.M. Friday.
