Margaret Hill Kincheloe Holbrook

December 22, 1917 — July 2, 2015

Margaret Hill Kincheloe Holbrook died at her home on July 2, 2015 at the age of 97.

She was the daughter of Dr. Allen and Antha Kincheloe, both of Stanley, Kentucky where Margaret was born and spent her early years. Dr. Kincheloe later moved his medical practice to Owensboro where Margaret attended Owensboro High School. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in 1938. She married Morton Holbrook in October 1940. They were married for 66 years until his death in 2006.

Margaret Holbrook was an accomplished piano player and vocal performer. She was actively involved in the Saturday Musicale and long supported the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, serving on its Board of Directors and endowing the Oboe Chair. For many years she has sponsored the Symphony's annual opera program, dedicated to the memory of her late husband. The two of them were avid opera fans and attended operas all over the United States and in Canada.

She was a member of the RiverPark Center's Founding Board of Directors. She and Morton led the Fifth Annual Capital Campaign, which resulted in the later naming of the Holbrook Balcony Lobby. She was a strong supporter of other Owensboro arts organizations including Theatre Workshop of Owensboro, Owensboro Dance Theatre, and the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art.

In addition to her civic involvement, Margaret was an accomplished golfer. She was the City of Owensboro Women's Golf Champion in 1963 and won the women's title at the Owensboro Country Club in 1964, 1966, 1967, and 1968. She and Morton played tennis and rode bicycles on a regular basis.

She is survived by two sons, Morton Holbrook III and his wife Lydia (Shao Pei), and Allen Holbrook and his wife Forrest Roberts; six grandchildren, Allen L. Holbrook and his wife Krissy, Stephen Holbrook, Kristen Holbrook, Joseph Holbrook, Sarah Holbrook, and Matthew Holbrook; and her nephew Sam Kincheloe.

The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Marjorie Atkinson, Rita Wedding, C.J. Smith, Christina Guffy, Delois Livingston, and Linda Greathouse for their many years of loving care and support, and to Bonnie Mayes for her 29 years of excellent management of the house and yard for her good friend "Lucy".

Margaret was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory on Sunday, July 5, 2015 from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. and at Third Baptist Church, where First Christian Church is currently holding worship services, on Monday, July 6, 2015 from 9:30 until the time of the funeral there at 11:00 a.m. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of contributions to the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, the RiverPark Center or First Christian Church.
