Sister Magdalene Schammel, 91, an Ursuline Sister of Belleville, Illinois, died July 21, 2003, at Mount Saint Joseph Motherhouse, Maple Mount, Ky. She was in her 70th year of religious life.
A native of Kenmare, North Dakota, Sister Magdalene was a teacher for 45 years in schools in Illinois and North Dakota. She also served as secretary in the Chancery Office of the Diocese of Belleville and for the diocesan newspaper, The Messenger. She retired in 1986.
Survivors include a brother, Leo Schammel of San Diego, Calif., and the members of her religious community.
Services are at 2:00 p.m. CDT on Friday at Mount Saint Joseph Chapel, Maple Mount, with burial in the convent cemetery at Maple Mount. A wake service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday also in the chapel. A memorial Liturgy will be held at 6:00 p.m. CDT on Sunday, August 3, at the Belleville Ursuline Motherhouse in Belleville, Illinois. Glenn Funeral Home, Owensboro, is in charge of arrangements.
