Madilene Lyons Smith Newman, 100, of Owensboro, passed away at her home, Saturday, April 4, 2009. She was born in Bay City, Michigan to the late Maude and Theodore Lyons on July 8, 1908. She moved to Owensboro in 1947 with her first husband, Trafton Smith to start the Pontiac Automobile dealership. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church for over 60 years. She was an avid bridge player.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Trafton Smith, her second husband, Richard S. Newman, and two sisters; Isabel VanHyfte and Genivive Aznaran.
Surviving are her daughter; Shirley (William) Jones of Owensboro, two granddaughters; Trafta (David) O'Bryan of Louisville, Ky., Tamella (James) Wilhoyte of Owensboro, and one grandson; Theodore Thompson of Walnut Ridge, AR., four great-grandchildren; Dana (Todd) Peters of Canton, CT., Nathan O'Bryan of Louisville, Courtney Wilhoyte and Storm Wilhoyte of Owensboro, and a great-great grandson; Hayden Peters.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at Trinity Episcopal Church with Fr. G. Patterson Connell officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Trinity Episcopal Church or to the charity of the donor's choice.
